Chives: 0, KfH: 1

KfH has done it this time. The Professor, still on his Indian cooking adventure, decided that he wanted to grow some of his own herbs. He started off with cilantro and chives, and put them in clay pots on the bedroom window sill. There’s a long drape over the window, so that the cats can’t jump up on it. The cilantro has been a disappointment, but the chives were showing real promise. Anybody see where this is going?

We went out shopping yesterday for the last of the needed Christmas presents, and were gone several hours. I thought it was strange that none of the cats greeted us at the door upon our return; it was kitty dinnertime and usually I have to be really careful walking in the door through the herd. Clueless Wonder was asleep on the floor, and Warrior Princess was asleep on the sofa. Both acted as if we’d just awakened them, and neither got up. I commented on how strange this was, and wondered aloud where the kitten was. The first thing I did was head back to the bedroom, where I was greeted by a pile of dirt under the window, by the bed. There were kitty tracks through the dirt, and baby chivlings dragged everywhere.

Unfortunately, The Professor was only seconds behind me, so I didn’t have a chance to hide the evidence. And The Prof was crushed. Utterly crushed. This is the first time he’s ever grown anything from seed, and he was treating those chives as though they were children from his own loins.

KfH spent last night in the bathroom, as much for her protection as for a punishment. We had to find her first, though. She was hiding under the bed. She must have somehow jumped up between the drape and the wall to get to the plants. I can’t believe how I continue to underestimate her ability to cause mischief.

I attempted to replant the chives, all the while muttering platitudes to The Prof like “Well, you would have had to thin them soon anyhow” and “They’ll be OK – the strong ones will start growing again if I just put a thin layer of dirt over them.” Who am I kidding? Those chives are simply future fertilizer for the next pot of chives he tries to grow.
