Snow, Searches and American Icons

“In the external scheme of things, this evening is as brief as the twinkling of an eye yet such twinklings is what eternity is made of.”

– Fred Rogers, 1928-2003

Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood debuted in the US in 1967. I was eleven years old then, far too old to take any interest in what was obviously a show for pre-schoolers. The last episode of Mr. Rogers aired in 2001, when I was 45 and years old and childless. I have never had much interest in children’s shows, child rearing or teaching very young children. For those reasons alone it should be amazing that I am not only aware of who Fred Rogers was, but can close my eyes and picture him clearly in his cardigan, and can hear him clearly saying “It’s a wonderful day in the neighborhood, Won’t you be my friend?”

Now take that amazement and multiply it a million times to represent the fact that virtually everyone in my age group who matches my qualifications can say the same thing. That alone is a testiment to the impact this man made not only on generations of children, but on a nation. I find that inspiring. And humbling. It’s proof that one person can make a difference.

It gives me hope that maybe I’m making some impact on the world as well.

I continue to get weird hits from odd-ball searches. A review of the past 24 hours reveals that people wishing information on the following found their way to my journal:

Arizona “large animal veterinarians”

sebacious

turtle tanks home

“Boulder Field” Pennsylvania Pics

unicorn tubes

Aura Quiz

picture of the trail of huck and jim

ENIGMA DVD TOSHIBA

best all time movie”

Logical-mathematical intelligence

jungian dream interpetation

starfish nervous system

What the heck is a “unicorn tube” anyhow? That’s become almost as persistent as “turtle tank”, and it’s far more bewildering. And what is this “Logical-mathematical intelligence” all about (that was a hit from a search engine using oriental characters, by the way). I don’t think anyone finding me through these little searches came away satisfied.

Our area is bracing itself for another snow storm tonight and tomorrow. Depending on which report you choose to listen to, we can expect accumulations of between two and ten inches. With a projected range like that, it seems inevitable that someone might get it right this time. All I care about is getting enough snow by rush hour tomorrow for my company to close. And that isn’t likely to happen.

Still waiting to hear from Dr. Liver about this MELD score business. I’m back to “I can be patient” mode, though. If all else fails, I’ll get this straightened out Monday, when I go in for my next paracentesis.

Meanwhile, I’ve got another tin of sardines for lunch today. Life is good.
