Getting better

I’m feeling a bit better today, but it still feels like I’ve been hit by a very large freight train. Since I’m still running a low-grade temperature, I took today off as well. I’ll be back to work tomorrow though, regardless.

Your sick days take away your other days off? Here it works so that if you have a note from the doctor for your sick days, it doesn’t affect your normal free days. Surely you still get paid if you’re sick? Here I think they pay you something when you’re sick, probably not the full salary but some of it.

Different employers work sick time in different ways. Where I work you get a certain number of “personal days” and a certain number of “vacation days”. The number is determined by how long you’ve been with the company. Right now I get two weeks of vacation, and three personal days. When I take these, I’m paid at my full rate. Vacation is supposed to be for planned time off, when you make arrangements in advance to be away. Personal days are rather like “sick days”, when you have an unforeseen need that keeps you away from work. So long as I don’t run out of vacation days and personal days, I still get paid, but once I use them up, then my time off is unpaid. The problem is that, since I have so many doctor’s appointments, my personal days and vacations days are being eaten at a rapid rate. I had hoped to save five days of vacation to take an actual vacation, but I don’t know that I’ll be able to do that after all, since I just used two days of sick time in one fell swoop.

Does your company let you take unpaid days if you’ve used up paid days?

Up until last year we could. However, the situation was abused by some employees, so the end of last year they made a new edict that it was no longer permitted to schedule vacations with unpaid time. So, basically, I’m screwed.

I did make it to my first writing class last night. I was a little disappointed, but first classes are always awkward. I’ll wait and see where it goes from here. We’ve been given two assignments for next week.

I can’t get into Hamipiks, so the picture of Warrior Princess in her e-collar will have to wait.
