Oh. My.

I was getting ready to leave the office tonight when the phone rang. It was somebody who works with my state’s APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services) branch of the USDA. This person had run a long term study at our facility, and we’d gotten to be friends while she was here.

It seems that the district veterinarian for my area has announced that he plans to retire in September. The APHIS vet had spoken with the state veterinarian about this, and apparently my name came up. The state veterinarian (whom I have met several times at conferences and continuing education lectures) was apparently enthusiastic about me as a possible replacement.

I have been encouraged to get my name on the civil service list ASAP if I’m interested in applying. Encouraging words concerning my chances of getting the position were dropped in my ear.

This is a very good career move … if I want to get involved in government work. It’s unusual that a someone from outside the government would be considerered for this position. They feel that because I work so closely with government agencies in some capacities for my current job I should be able to skip a couple of the “beginner” government grades to qualify for this.

It’s a long term committment. If I take this position, it isn’t something I can just waltz out of in a year or two. I’ve got a couple of big calls to make tomorrow. And I need to talk with the Socialist.

I’m feeling overwhelmed at the moment.

  1. nothing (not a job, doc appt, cellphone call, favorite song on the walkman or radio) is worth finding yourself in this picture, whether you’re the pedestrian or driver. i never cross until i’ve made eye-contact with drivers stopped at a redlight, especially, those waiting to turn left when i’m on their right. it’s sad that you can’t bank on redlights or stop signs anymore.

  2. A chilling picture. I work in downtown and often drivers don’t pay attention. They are to busy on their cell phones and swerving in the road. I have come close a few times to being hit while walking so I tend to wait until the driver sees me and gives me the signal of recognition. But even still some people slowly roll through the intersection waiting for me to get out of their way. I wonder what is so damn important and I have often halted my steps and gave them a look that made them brake. People are impatient, oblivious to surroundings while driving their car. The light out front of my work has had many accidents, as people don’t slow down and run the red. Two police officers were hospitalized last month because of that. Bottom line, that picture tells it all, look before you cross the street or you might be taking an uninvited trip to the hospital.

  3. How do you know this detailed information about your hits? Do you have a special hits counter?

I have heard other people refering to details about their hits too on other diaries.

Am I out of the loop AGAIN???

    😉

Seriously, seriously consider this one. How often does an opportunity like this get dangled before one?

I can understand that it’s overwhelming, but it should be *exciting* too!

And what a wonderful compliment from people who know what they’re talking about. You’re obviously admire in your field.

  6. They don’t WANT the puppy trained in the traditional way. As long as she uses paper for poopy and the box to pee (which I have my doubts about her doing, with the smell of their house and her behaviour when she was at mine)then they are content. I find this unacceptable and have told them that she can be successfully crate trained to go outside within three days and that I would be willing to train her myself. They don’t want that. They want a dog who will use inside facilities. It is all I can do not to slap them completely silly. They are too lazy to take her out and it is just that simple. I feel sorry for her in the same way that I feel sorry for their two older, bigger dogs whom they could not successfully train and banished outside.

I am firmly convinced that they shouldn’t have dogs. The dog they had when I met them had to be destroyed because she bit a child who then required extensive plastic surgery. She was an Akita who was never properly socialised. Said dog snuck up on me one night and bit me on the top of the head for absolutely no reason while I was sitting in a lawn chair minding my own business. They said I must have "moved wrong". *raises eyebrows*

I do not wish to watch their puppy and I will bow out. I am sure I will not be thought of favoribly thereafter, but ask me if I really care.

  7. WOW,

Now that picture says it all. The first thing I noticed was the briefcase and the female walking. Then the body, then I looked at the driver running the red light. I thought it was a woman at first, hmmmm…still do. But no reaction what so ever. Both hands on the wheel, looking straight ahead like just she (or he) is thinking about something other than driving. That is a scary picture, indeed. I have always told my daughters to look both ways before crossing, even when they have the green light. I think that picture will take a while to get out of my head. Good luck with the decision. I know when I was in the Military I loved it but working for the State of NC was no picnic. Too much waste, fraud and politics for me. Of course, I work for a government contractor now, only a little better, lol. Either way, I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do.

  8. Congratulations!!! You’re researcher now, or what? And you’d be working as a vet then?

I just think it’d be a magnifient job for you, actually working with pets and their owners.

Good luck, hope you get the job!!

  9. It’s creepy to see a person in such an unnatural position! Poor fellow, and poor everyone in the vicinity.
