The Week That Wouldn’t End

Tonight I had to rush my foster to an emergency veterinary clinic half an hour from my house. This morning she was occasionally doing some open-mouthed breathing (never good in a cat), and as the day progressed she began refusing most food (never good in a diabetic). Her belly, which has always been distended since I got her, turns out to have been distended due to ascites (free fluid in the abdomen). She apparently doesn’t have FIP or right-sided heart failure, two big reasons for ascites.

I never thought much about her distended belly because she’d been seen by three different veterinarians over the course of at least five visits, and none of them commented on it except to confirm she was not pregnant (she’d already been spayed when she was taken into our system, as it turned out). We’re waiting on tests to determine if we try to save her or if her time has come. Now I feel guilty and sick to my stomach.

I don’t think I’ve posted a picture of her yet. She doesn’t look like much, but she’s an absolute sweetheart who likes to lay on top of your feet or nestle in as close to your side as the laws of physics allow.
