Shattered Sleep

I was tired enough last night that I decided to drag my sorry carcass to bed at 8:00. I ate a little dinner first, but really didn’t want it. I found “Andy Griffith” on the tube, and kept that on as noise to keep me company while I ate; Tuesday is when the Socialist has his single evening class this semester. After a few minutes, Kitten crawled on top of me and curled up. I felt like a cad when I finally dislodged her an hour later, but it was a nice little period of quality time while it lasted.

By the time I got to bed my stomach was upset and I was so tired I had chills. This happens to me several times a week now, and I’m hoping it’s just a passing fad my body is experimenting with. I was so tired I forgot to set my alarm clock. If the Cat Alarm hadn’t gone off at 7:05 I’d have overslept terribly, instead of just oversleeping slightly.

My slumbers (and the Socialist’s) were disturbed at about 2:00 a.m. by a loud shattering crash from the living room. The Socialist went down to investigate and discovered that one of our furry idiots (he was blaming the Kitten) had dislodged a candleholder from its home on the top of his CD rack, pulverizing one of the glass inserts. The votive holder wasn’t just broken, but it was nearly atomized. The other four that were part of the candleholder were unblemished. I can’t imagine how this happened, especially since it landed on the carpet, but there was no denying the evidence.

This is the scene as it greeted me this morning. The Socialist had cordoned off the area by

strategically moving a few small pieces of furniture and some boxes, but the accident scene

itself was basically untouched.

A closer inspection of the shattered bits of the blue glass candleholder that had been atomized.

It looks as if a small bomb went off inside the candleholder. I begin to suspect that one

of the cats is a terrorist sympathizer.

And finally, a full view of the scene of the crime. That candleholder sat on top of this CD rack

for seven months, ever since we moved. And back at the old apartment, it sat there for an

additional year or so. Why someone (and I’m not entirely sure it was Kitten) suddenly

developed a case of the clumsies last night after all this time I’m not sure.

I doubt I’ll be able to find a replacement for the blue glass candleholder, but who knows. If I have enough energy, perhaps I’ll go looking this weekend.

  1. Awww…dang! Hate that happened to your blue glass candle holder. Looks as if it was very pretty by the blue color alone. Was it crackled glass? I had one that also fell on carpet and did the same thing. It was the crackled glass and I reasoned that since it was already ‘cracked’ this was the reason it shattered so horribly, even on carpet. Hope you find a replacement! 🙂

  2. Hmmm, me wonders… if said cats can get to the top of the cd holder then what good was the ummm barricade around the disaster LOL! I’m so glad he left the mess for you to attend to…at least we got to see pictures LOL!!

  3. I can imagine that it probably scared the dickens out of whichever cat did the deed. Maybe even enough of a deterrant to keep them from jumping up there again? Probably not.

  4. Thankfully our one cat does very little in the way of damage. When we were catsitting for my brother though, his Russian Blue Leeloo did horible things all through the house.

Best of luck on the replacement
