MELD Update

I returned from lunch to the message light blinking on the phone on my desk. The transplant coordinator from the Big City Hospital had called to let me know that my MELD was at 18. In her words, she says that we have to get me “a little bit sicker”. In other words, we need to get me one more point from somewhere. She suggested I talk to my doctor about anticoagulants or other medications that would give me that extra point.

Unfortunately, I’m already on the anticoagulants, and we dare not increase the dosage any further. I already walk around with perpetual nosebleeds, and a papercut will continue to bleed forever when I get one. I’m not sure what other methods are available to increase my MELD, but Dr. Liver will definitely be asked about this when I go for my next paracentesis on Monday.

Ironic … I have to get sicker in order to qualify for getting well.

  1. As long as I’ve been on usenet and BBs, I know there are some people who are indelible. You’re among them. Until death or senility takes me, you’ve got a place in my head. 🙂

  2. you’ve made an impression on your many cyber friends. that will never go away.

as for rita’s…i’ve never tried one, i’ll have to give it a shot.

  3. The great thing about writers and readers is that they absorb what’s around them and entertwine it with their own thoughts and beliefs. I can not only assure you that I will remember you as a person but as I’ve absorbed your writings they have helped me to look at things with a different perspective and that will live on indefinately as I share my words with others.

  4. Let’s see if I can somehow keep this one to posting once (doubt it). I don’t want you to get sicker! I just want you to get better! And if -I’m- frustrated, I can’t imagine how you must feel. :/

  5. I never thought I would hear myself congratulating someone for being sicker…

With that in mind, don’t take this the wrong way when I say that I hope you don’t feel better, or maybe that you do feel better, but your body is lying to you?
