Questions of Taste

I came home tonight a bit late. I’m going to a friend’s wedding in a few weeks, and I’ve panicked about the outfit I’ve picked out. I’m afraid it’s going to be way too formal. It’s a long off-white dress with a mandarin collar and short sleeves. I was going to pair it with a dark red mid-sleeve satin dress jacket, dark red coolie style slippers and some oriental jewelry my mom left me. Anyhow, I’m desperately looking for a nice pants suit to wear instead. When the hell did pants suits go out of style? Most stores don’t carry more than one or two, and they’re always black. I absolutely refuse to wear black to a wedding. Frankly, I was breaking a host of Emily Post rules by planning to wear off white to a wedding too. The groom-to-be joked with me at one point that it was going to be a Betazoid kind of wedding, clothes optional. I almost wish that were the truth at this point.

Clueless Wonder retains the capacity for surprise. When I came home tonight, there was a hairball waiting for me in the entrance way. No surprise there. As I gathered up the mess to throw away, though, I noticed some objects embedded in the wad of gook. Further investigation revealed two cloves and a cardamom pod, which had to be stolen from the remains of some Indian rice The Socialist made that we had for dinner last night. I’m not sure which surprises me more – that Clueless actually ate cloves and a cardamom, or that he managed to keep them down for at least twelve hours.

  1. Cats! There’s no explaining them.

Kimi-cat used to eat chile at our neighbour’s, eyes watering as he wolfed it down. He also once ate two cherry pits while we watched, astonished.

Wear the dress and look stunning! Your outfit sounds wonderful, and the dark red jacket frees it from being too close to white. It’s better to risk being overly formal on such occasions than erring in the other direction.

  2. I understand your wedding wear dillema. I have seen some more appropriate pantsuits in online catalogs. Indian salwar-kameez are currently popular, and can range from very simple to quite fromal. They tend to be quite figure flattering, as well. There are lots of online resources for them, and they can usually be delivered within a week. Just a thought.
