More Energy = More Update

The first day went fine, though it was not what I expected. Working back in the pharmacy means working in your own little world. Based on one day’s experience, there is virtually no opportunity to meet any co-workers but the ones who work the pharmacy. As far as that went, I am apparently the only technician working this shift. There is virtually no formal training – they show you how to work something once and then it’s sink or swim time. Working the the drugs is straightforward, but working the drive-up window and the cash registers is another matter entirely.

Having said that, the pharmacist who first took me under his wing was incredibly patient, and I was feeling rather optimistic about things. The second pharmacist who showed up about half-way through my shift was a little less personable, but stayed patient until about 5:30 when people started leaving work and were stopping in to the pharmacy to pick up things on the way home. My lack of skill at the register began to truly hinder things at that time and I almost got the feeling that the pharmacist on duty was more than glad to see me leave for the day.

I think right now my biggest problem is that I don’t know enough to be helpful, so when I run out of things to do I don’t know what to do next. I alternate between walking through the stock, trying to familiarize myself with where everything is, and hovering over the printer waiting for more orders to be printed so I can go back to counting pills and shelving bottles.

It isn’t much, but it’s a paycheck.

My schedule is set for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. I’ll admit I’m surprised they didn’t want me for at least one weekend day, but I guess they aren’t as busy over the weekend, when most doctors don’t have office hours.

  1. All in all, it doesn’t sound horrible. You’ll get the hang of the registers in no time, I’m sure, and then you’ll feel better about being there. Good luck!

  2. In a few weeks time (maybe sooner), you will find it getting easier and easier. Heck, eventually you will be doing it without even thinking about it.

  3. that second pharmacist sounds like a pill! (couldn’t resist…) seriously, they should be thanking their lucky stars that they have someone of your caliber working for them. i mean, c’mon! ps. i hope you have a good pair of shoes to take care of your tootsies…

pps. i’m jealous that you are close to any festival XPN is putting on. the music sucks here. they just flipped a rock/alternative station to pop/rock, just like phila did with Y100.
