Playing catch-up

I got an unexpected phone call at work yesterday from a girl who was in vet school with me. She was in my town on business and wondered if I’d be free for her to stop by when her meeting was over. I didn’t give her a chance to reconsider.

She is one of the two other member of our class I’m aware of who went into industry rather than some form of private practice, although I discovered that a fourth has recently jumped ship from private practice to industry in the last year. J was one of those billiant people I liked to hang out with in hopes that some would rub off onto me. After vet school she went on and got an MBA at a very pretigious Ivy League school. It was nice to finally sit down and discuss job woes with somebody who had a clue what I was talking about; being an industry vet is totally different than working private practice. Talking with J certainly put things into perspective for me.

She’s putting in twelve-plus hour days, works all weekend and recently lost two top people out of her department, which means her work load has just increased. Let that be a reminder to me to stop snivelling when I think I have it bad with my ten hour days and both weekend days off. She is now living within an hour and a half of here, so there’s no excuse for us not to get together a little more frequently than we have (the last time she and I talked was last year this time).

And with that, I’d best get back to work.
