California Christmas plans.

I’ve spent the morning working up a good head of depression. I don’t know yet if there’s anything to be bummed out about, but I figure I might as well beat the rush and sulk early, just in case it’s necessary.

My work announced last week that we’re working Saturdays in December. The schedule they’ve posted means that I need to work on December 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th. The problem is that I’m supposed to be on vacation the 22nd and 29th.

Because of the way things played out this year, I’ve only got three days of vacation left for the end of the year. I already knew that I was going to have to take two days of my vacation as unpaid time because of this. But I wasn’t counting on taking FOUR days of unpaid vacation.

Now this not is definite yet. My boss is seeing what he can do for me. But the bottom line is that I’m going to miss four work days, and I can’t afford to have that much time docked. So if they can’t work anything out, I’m going to have to cancel my plane tickets. I can eat the loss of the plane ticket easier than the loss of a paycheck. I’m thinking I can even apply to my company to reimburse me, since they were the ones that forced the cancellation.

I’m more than halfway resigned to this. But The Professor is going to have a geyser-style blow out if things fall out this way. And that I’m not looking forward to. Well, no point in worrying yet about it.

It looks like I have a 50/50 chance of spending Christmas alone with the Warrior Princess, the Clueless Wonder and the Kitten from Hell though.

I also found out this morning that there is credible evidence that a much larger company may attempt a hostile takeover of my company. This same company recently purchased a neighbor company of ours this year; those employees’ last days will be December 31st. If we’re bought out, our days would be numbered too, I fear.

I worry that I’ve boxed myself in with this job. The work I do is not easily translatable to any other position. Guess this is just a wait-and-see as well.

All in all, not a great Monday.
