Cats and Religion

Cats. Why did I think I wanted cats?

Until things get settled, I’ve been keeping our three cats separated at night. The Warrior Princess has the bedroom with me, since she’s the most likely to settle in at the foot of the bed and patiently wait for morning. Clueless Wonder Jr. gets the spare bedroom, with lots of kitten food and toys, which keeps the noise away from my bedroom door and reduces the amount of damage that can be inflicted on the apartment when I’m not supervising. Clueless Wonder Sr. gets the run of the rest of the place, so he can munch on his kibbles one at a time all night (as is his wont) and have some R&R away from the Unholy Terrorist Kitten.

This morning, Warrior Princess started demanding breakfast at 5:15. I don’t get up until six. I’d have simply rolled over and ignored her, save for the fact that she still has her full complement of claws, and knows what she can use them on for maximal effect. This morning she started plucking on the box spring. It is impossible to sleep when a cat attempts to pull the guts out of the box spring beneath you. I shut her in the small bathroom adjoining the master bedroom in hopes of getting another half hour’s sleep or so.

But that was not to be. After about ten minutes, I started to hear the familiar plucking again. I assumed that she’d discovered she could reach beneath the door and pluck the carpet on the other side. She’d already pulled that stunt at the bedroom door, to the lasting detriment of the carpet there. I gave up and got up. I went to open the bathroom door so I could feed her … but the door was jammed somehow and I couldn’t open it.

I did what anyone would do. I pushed harder. With a ripping sound, the door gave way. I looked down to find that the floor tiles behind the door had been pulled up by Her Royal Pain in the Ass, and had wedged under the door when I tried to open it. The result was that I inadvertently finished what she had started – she worked the tiles loose, but I was the one to rip them off the floor.
