Catastrophic Medical Fund

At work we have access to a catastrophic reimbursement fund. People with large medical bills above and beyond insurance coverage can submit for reimbursement through this plan. I was told that I wasn’t eligible for this fund because the bulk of my expenses were incurred while I was still an active, full-time employee (insurance paid 100% of the transplant, so I didn’t get hit with any whopping medical bills during my hospital stay).

Well, that means that I’ve shelled out several thousand dollars so far for medications and doctor’s visit copays. I wasn’t about to complain, since I’d have owed over quarter-million dollars without the insurance that my company provided . But it’s still a lot of money, and I’ve felt the pinch.

I was just informed that these bills may well indeed be covered, and my company will be submitting them to the fund. I’ll have to check, but I’m pretty sure the eligible incurred costs are over several thousand dollars at this point. If I can include the bills for my neck as well, that’s another $260 or so dollars I can add to the reimbursement.

My fortunes far outweigh my misfortunes.
