Scarifying Seeds and Cats.

From: Calichef Date Posted: 29 Apr 2003

It seems that “Kitty Grass” would be ideal for old O’Beast. Moonflowers! I just love moonflowers! I have to ask, did you remember to scarify the seeds? They won’t sprout if you don’t. Hemostats and a cheap serrated steak knife seem to work best. What would you think about a miniature rose hedge for under the fence? It would be pretty, grow in fast, smell wonderful and block the escape artist tendencies of certain bad kitties. What did you have in mind?

Actually, Cali, you don’t need to scarify morning glory seeds. My younger sister (she of the green thumb) grows them every year, and just sows them “as is” in the ground. It will slow down their germination time, and you need to keep them well watered for about a week so they absorb enough water to burst their shells, but they’ll do just fine. I planted the seeds two weeks before our frost-free date, so retarding the germination just a bit should time things perfectly for them. Meanwhile, it gives me the satisfaction of having something to do in the garden.

I will probably put one tea rose bush out, but if I do it will be in a pot. Since I live in an apartment, I don’t want to stick the next tenants with stuff they may not like, so I’m pretty much staying with annuals or cheap and easily removed perennials. I was thinking of putting a back border of dracaena spikes in along the base of the fence. That should slow the little morons down next time they make a bolt for freedom!

  1. Glad you caught your escapee without incidence!

It seems to me that years ago when we had our pet store in California we sold a product called "Kitty Grass" just for indoor cats.

The Socialist is exactly right about the car. Don’t feel guilty, just enjoy, enjoy, enjoy. You work hard and deserve it regardless of being sick.

We have noticed a few of them in these parts.

  2. Hi….

Covered in light pink petals….sounds kinda nice

It does only take 5 seconds and the ‘cat’ is gone!! I hate that!

    enjoy the car

  3. I am living vicariously through you on your prius (sp?) adventures. 47 mpg…wow!!!

Hmm, kitten opens door, kitten retreats when yelled at…and O’Beast actually goes for it??? I think the kitten planned the whole thing just to watch the show!

  4. Oh for pete’s sake, that is asking too much. Repeating all the information a second time just gives them a chance to make more mistakes. Scares me to think about the folks that need their prescriptions NOW.
