Dr. Fell

I don’t know a whole hellofalot more now than I did before the doctor’s appointment this morning, but at least things are moving now. They took enough blood out of me to leave me anemic for a month, and we’ve got me scheduled for a PET scan first thing the morning of December 31st. The information we get back from all these tests will stage the cancer, and let us figure out where we go from here.

From all indications, though, we’ve caught this *very* early. Dr. Fell spelled out many of the various options for treatment that are possible, but until we’re sure this hasn’t gotten into the blood or solid organs it’s too early to start on any treatment. If I am indeed staged at IA (the earliest form of the disease) then it’s entirely possible that we’ll just go with an application of some heavy duty topical steroids or with a retinoid.

Apparently I’ve got a rare form of a rare cancer. My darling little abnormal lymphocytes are apparently specifically attracted to hair follicles. There’s an interesting little review at Medscape called Follicular Mycosis Fungoides: Variability of a Rare Entity. I’ve noticed that I’m starting to get hits on my diary for people searching for information on the disease, so I’ll continue to link to solid information when I find it.

I’m going to take a chance and open up my diary to unregistered as well as registered commentators, in case any of the random visitors passing through have any pertinent information to share. Since I’ve had trouble with this before though, I am prepared to shut down the ability to make unregistered comments at the first sign of trouble.

  1. Icky.

I was hoping he’d say something like "this isn’t cancer, it’s a winning lottery ticket…"

But, you already mentioned your near superpowered human skills, so I’d just remind your body it can survive anything.

  2. It’s encouraging to hear that you’ve hopefully caught this very early. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the tests and PET scan show this to be the case and that the treatment will be as mild as possible.

  3. Dang Girl! Have I ever been out of touch. I had no idea so much time and so many events had passed that so much could have happened in your life about which I was completely clueless. I wish you and the Mathmetician as much joy, peace and kitty purrs as you can stand today and ongoing…
