I’ve been listening

to Stan Rogers tonight. Balm for the soul.

A Matter of Heart

lyrics and music by Stan Rogers

found on: From Coffee House To Concert Hall

We live in fear of no one to love us

Of feeling like an empty hole

With no kind heart or strengthening hand

To light the dark and secret soul.

Behind the walls of lonely protection

Afraid to give for what we may lose,

And to hide our sin, or let someone within,

Everyone will have to choose!

Chorus:

Put your life on the line,

Give your hand and pledge your time

To the love whose lips inflame you

Like some ancient and golden wine;

And to all it’s a start in fulfilling greatest needs in part,

For in whatever we dream of what we some day want to be

It’s a matter of heart.

We like to think we know what we’re doing,

We always like to be in control.

The rational mind rules the passionate heart

Is what the ancient sages told.

But that can sound a little bit hollow,

When you’re sitting by the fire alone!

And the rarest old wine tastes of ashes and brine,

When you’ve no one there to keep you warm.

Chorus:

The way in which our pride will stall us,

When we know we should be losing control,

Puts us in the fear of falling and we let it go!

Our careful words are self-deceiving,

Though we like to call them ‘pretense’ and ‘art’,

But every old line is held in the mind,

When it’s really just a matter of heart.

  1. Words…yea do hurt. I find the intention behind, the focus more than the words that cause the damage. Does that make sense? Nope.

The cat in the house..that is just wondersful!! It is the cutest shot ever!! I think you and ADM are in competition for cute puddy cats!!

  2. I have to say, I’m completely in love with your cats, especially Adolescent Cat from Hell…What sweeties!

And you are most certainly right about words being the most powerful weapon in our arsenal. My mom used to throw that old line at me (…words can never hurt you), but I learned otherwise from a very young age.

  3. Some very interesting quotes there! I hadn’t heard the one about reproach. It’s a good one. When I was a kid I took words terribly personally. Most of it was due to my own insecurity. Sure, I’d smart off back at them, "I’m rubber, you’re glue, whatever you say- bounces off me and sticks to you." But honestly it bothered me and I would question what they said. I still do. I think it’s human nature to want to be a better person and if it’s the callous words of others that provokes that… then so be it. I still prefer a nicely worded bit of criticism than a blunt one anyday. 🙂 Thanks for sharing those thoughts.

Bok: "I prefer not to make scraps of sentimental writing. When I write anything I want it to be real and connected in form, as, for instance, in your quotation from Lord Lytton’s play of “Richelieu,” “The pen is mightier than the sword.” Lord Lytton would never have put his signature to so naked a sentiment. Surely I will not.

In the text there was a prefix or qualification:

Beneath the rule of men entirely great

The pen is mightier than the sword.

Now, this world does not often present the condition of facts herein described. Men entirely great are very rare indeed, and even Washington, who approached greatness as near as any mortal, found good use for the sword and the pen, each in its proper sphere.

You and I have seen the day when a great and good man ruled this country (Lincoln) who wielded a powerful and prolific pen, and yet had to call to his assistance a million of flaming swords. "

  5. I’m not sure why I posted that previous comment, but it’s interesting.

Words are potent, for sure. I, also, believe in using them ‘honestly’.

  6. I am neither hurt, nor offended by this!

    OK, enough silliness.

I find myself not so much irritated as amazed that quite a few people (not necessarily here, but everywhere) cannot use words of their native language correctly.

While I am also subject to this, and am striving to become more word savvy, I am surprised at the number of people who just don’t care. How can someone not care about being able to accurately communicate with others?

Don’t even get me started on the words people make up….

I read your entries on words with great interest.

It’s the intent and not so much the words that count.

I can read sweetly worded entries at DD that I know are written to mislead the reader and hide the writer.

I can read bluntly honest and crudely worded entries that are just someone speaking from the heart.

    Which has the greater merit?

Words are just words – it’s what the writer (or speaker) really intends that counts.

And sometimes we all get it wrong.
