Sugar and Spice

If I was reading this in any other person’s journal, I’d suspect the veracity of the storyteller. At the very least I’d wonder if the author was suffering Munchausen’s by proxy. Satan’s Little Fart Cloud was confirmed today to be diabetic.

We’ve worried about this for the last year and a half because of the steroids she’s been on to control her tiraditis. Interestingly enough, she’s currently on the smallest dose of steroids she’s been on since she was diagnosed with feline triad syndrome – just 2.5 mg budesonide every other day. Whether it’s her medications, or if she was just fated to suffer, SLFC now gets to chalk yet another ailment up on her board of woe.

Blood sugar today was 299, and urine glucose was >1000. Normal blood sugar for a cat should never be greater than 140, and is usually more like 100-120. There should never be any sugar in the urine.

We know that she wasn’t diabetic when she was diagnosed with ringworm because we checked. We know she wasn’t diabetic as recently as September, because we kept checking. I started seeing hints that something was different about three weeks ago, when she started losing weight and showed a decreased interest in food (I’ve been fork-feeding her at least half her meals). This may well explain the latest ringworm relapse, which shouldn’t have happened now that we have her on the mega-drug of all fungal mega-drugs, Sporanox.

I ordered a glucose meter for her today. I purchased her insulin and a box of syringes today. I got a case of the DM diabetes food for her today. And then I came home and had a nice cathartic breakdown.
